The origin of the word graffiti is derived from Greek “graphein,” meaning “to write,” “draw,” or “scratch.” But moreover, the practice, as we know it today; to take to the streets to paint or tag, allegedly started with a Greek national in the US whose practice caught on and then made its way back to the homeland.

The accuracy of this tale, I wasn’t able to validate, but it makes for a good story, and with Athens density of street art — floor to ceiling, wall to wall — you feel that this must be the source.

In 2017, I had the pleasure of calling this ancient city home; soaking in the sunshine, the food and, of course, the art! When it comes to documenting street art in the Greek capital, the greatest challenge is that there is simply too much to accurately map.

One street in Athens can house more great art than an entire city elsewhere. So, I have tried my hardest to do it justice. I have broken my map into the main artistic regions of Athens and pinned spots where there is a large density of art, or significant murals to check out.

Use the map as a guide, but keep your eyes peeled from place to place, there is gold everywhere on the streets of Athens.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbSUyRm1hcHMlMkZkJTJGdSUyRjAlMkZlbWJlZCUzRm1pZCUzRDFUUUd2aFpYMTVVQlJFWHg5bWRMVnlkN2x2aHg4LUlSUCUyMiUyMHdpZHRoJTNEJTIyMTIwMCUyMiUyMGhlaWdodCUzRCUyMjcwMCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRmlmcmFtZSUzRQ==[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_custom_heading text=”Street Art Kerameikos and Metaxourgeio” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]When first arriving in Athens, I was lucky enough to call this area home.
