I think that fed the craving a little bit as well, but not as much as I would have liked. But I think it’s either A, you can’t really even leave the house except for exercise so that limits how much you can do. And then B, it probably just looks a bit bad when we can’t leave the house, even though you might have one activity that’s probably in the grey areas of the legal part of things for some people, it looks a bit unfair to be going out and doing that when people can’t leave their homes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]Even with speaking with some friends who lived within 5k of the city, it’s like ah yeah, you could have in theory still done that, but I think it’s also… They had a good point as well. I think even that is a really powerful message in street art that you can really reach people at the time when they need art the most when galleries are closed, everything’s moved online. To still be able to engage with new artwork. So I think I’m still on two minds on that one as to my own behaviour, but it was good to get out when I could and put up some pieces. There was a project back in Docklands a few years ago called the Docklands Art Collective, where they pretty much rented out three retail spaces to different artists that would occupy retail locations that don’t really have businesses in them at the time, so that was really cool because I got to meet a lot of different artists. It was quite serendipitous to have been able to meet a lot of random people, and then luckily join an art studio. It just went on from there. And then because creating becomes then part of your identity, so you meet friends, that also becomes your community of friends and thriving people that are also like-minded and a bit kooky as well and creative. And that was fun. Everything had to be perfect, though, and that didn’t feel as free-flowing as then drawing things like nature, because part of the fun of it was switching my brain off and not thinking about things too much. I felt like I was squeezing art into every spare moment, like lunchtimes and on the train, and I’d come home trying to make the most of spare bits of time in life, but it also became fragmented. I was like “I just want a day where I can sit down and focus, and I don’t have to start something then put it down and pick it up 15 times within a week. I can just devote a proper eight hours.” Because your weekends, if your working during the week, the weekends end up seeing friends and catching up with family and all your life stuff. You come to Monday, and you’re like, “Oh, man, where did that go?” So I just wanted an extra day in my life and devote that space to art. And I was lucky that I had management at the time that were like, “Yeah, that’s cool,” because they were pretty good with work-life balance stuff, which I think is quite fortunate because I’ve had friends that have been in different organisations and it’s been a bit of an uphill battle to try to get a day off.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”8669″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][heading]Investing in the Practice[/heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]It just feels like instead of earning that money on that day it’s kind of like you’re cashing it in for time. Whereas on paper, you can draw something growing across the page, but it’s not quite the same as trying to portray something growing across a building.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]One of the ones that I did last year, I was sitting in traffic on Lygon Street, and there was this building with ivy growing over the top half of it, just this beautiful building that’s painted black, and I thought I would love to paint ivy growing from the bottom of it. So it’s mixing with life, art imitating life I guess or vice versa. So, things like that where I just see buildings and go, “Oh, that would be really cool if it had this structure on it.” And sometimes there are other things that you see and think this kinda looks a bit like it needs some love. It would be lovely to put something here, and then someone can just be unsuspecting and turn a corner and be like, “Ah, there’s art here,” and not really expect it. One of the artists at the studio, Tinky, she specialises in miniatures so she’ll do miniature installations on the street. And things like that are so lovely because you discover them and you feel like it’s your own engagement with the artwork that you’re just going about your day, and then you see something really tiny, and it draws you into the little details that you find on the street that you wouldn’t otherwise pay attention to, like cracks in bricks or stuff like that. We were scheduled to have this group show where we’ve rounded up a whole bunch of different local female street artists and urban artists to put on a show, and then COVID happened. We’re just in the process of organising that, but that will be opening 3rd of December. Another month and a bit away, we’re so excited to be able to have something to look forward to now. Don’t know if there will be an opening night, but it’s in a good spot where people can be passing through and not have to worry about the 20 people or 10 people within a gallery at any one time as well.
